Dear EJPAC members and anyone else looking,

Happy spring! I hope you have been enjoying it, and have been getting out to paint! Frankly, it is just not the same here in East Johnson without Bradley, but it's wonderful that certain individuals are taking it upon themselves to find places to show his work. He was so prolific and dedicated to his work, and such a good painter - and I know he would be so pleased to have his paintings on display!

I am helping to put together a mailing list for Bradley Fox's upcoming shows. If you would like be on the mailing list to get Bradley's announcements, please respond email me with your name and mailing address.

If you want to go out and paint sometime, please also let me know! We'll see what evolves.

Dear friends,

Bradley Fox, founding member of East Johnson Plein Air Club, and our very good friend, died unexpectedly last weekend (some time during weekend of October 16/17 as far as I know.) There will be a memorial service on Friday, October 29th. I am unsure of location and time, and I will make sure to post this information as soon as I find out.

I met with Dorhn and Deb this morning so we could talk about our loss, and also to discuss the future of the Plein Air Club. We wanted to share that each of us had had long conversations with Bradley the week before his death, where we had been throwing around ideas for making plans for the upcoming winter:
1. Bradley and I talked about moving the Plein Air Club to large, public indoor spaces for the winter (so not exactly plein air... but ..). We talked about taking trips to airports, malls, the large spaces of colleges, like Johnson State college's library and swimming pool, etc. We also discussed our neglecting this blog, and how we really needed to update!
2. Bradley and Dorhn had also discussed starting up a Salon type of meeting once a month or every other month, where we can gather, have group critique and snacks and good company. This would take place at people's homes.
3. Bradley and Deb had talked about taking Plein Air Club trip to Montreal for inspiration!

We are interested in all these things. Bradley really was the energy behind the Plein Air Club. I hope we can keep the energy going.

The rain has been tricky to get around and again it cancelled our outing to the Stowe Bike path. While this year hasn't been as rainy as last year, it has presented challenges to meeting as a group. I did get out to Stowe and Smuggler's Notch between the bad weather. I have been working in a bigger sketchbook to try working in a looser more aggressive style. I find my decisions about color, value, editing form, are forced to rely more on intuition than analytical thinking when I work larger. here are some early attempts. We will see how this progresses over the summer.

Another couple of weeks of painting have come and gone. We met in Montgomery on the 16th and it was a beautiful clear day. Unfortunately we had to deal with strong cold winds.So strong in fact that the painting I had worked on for 3 hours got blown over, paint box and all as I was standing back to look at it. Therefore the sketchbook image for today.
Next was Jeffersonville Village painting on the 23rd. We fared better with the weather as it was sunny and hot. Finding shade to work in was the only problem of the day.
The small painting in this post is the apple tree in front of the Varnum Library. I also did other color sketches, stock-piling images for studio work.
The last sketch is from the ol'-fav spot on the Lamoille near the Long Trail footbridge.
Brian and I spent an afternoon sketching and painting there, as well as some work in Montpelier on Monday. The EJ Plein Air club can inspire some great extracurricular drawing!
Hope to see many more of You out there with us in the coming months 'cuz in Vermont snow is always on the way!!

Oh, The Rains and Snow

We had a rough time with the weather getting out the last couple of weeks. We did however, have some great painting time at Warren and Tara's farm here in Johnson. We made repeated outings to the farm and these are a couple small paintings I did there. Although the photo doesn't show it, each time we visited the poplars gave us increasingly brilliant yellows. We are headed into the villages in the upcoming weeks so look for more posts soon.

April Rains

April 4th brought cold temps and some wind but I managed to get a couple of small paintings done. Dohrn and I were the brave ones that made it out to paint amid the noisy frogs in the pond.
April 11 and 18th bought rain, snow, rain again....and then some more rain. Due to the unpredictability of the weather we will be
trying again on April 25th (Sun,9am) to visit the Warren farm here in Johnson. Keeping it closer to home until we can have some consistent sunshine, Irasburg will be rescheduled for a later date.
Hope to see some more company for next week.

March 28, 2010 at Hogback Road

Hello all. We canceled this morning's outing, and rescheduled for this afternoon. We decided to go to the Long Trail river crossing at Hogback Road. Easy to get to, close by and lovely! It was still cold, but the sun was threatening to shine and we we went at 1:45. We figured we could handle it.

We both worked small and quickly because our fingers were getting increasingly cold. I splashed around with an ink stick and my favorite (expensive) brush, while Bradley used colored pencil. Finally after about 45 minutes we had had enough and our fingers were freezing. But it was great to get out anyway! I look forward to next week at Dohrn's.

Nature Conservancy Painting

The group has been working on Barr Hill in Greensboro. One of the Nature Conservancy Lands in Vermont that have public trails, perfect for Plein Air Painting.
Even with snow sqauls last week we managed to get a fair amount of painting done. This is one of my attempts. Bradley

Art at the Bistro

A couple of pictures of the Show at the Winding Brook Bistro in Johnson. The Show will be up until Oct 30, then will travel to Red Square in Burlington for the month of November. The opening will be part of the First Friday Art openings on November 6.

We visited Maggie Sherman on Lake View Terrace in Burlington this past weekend and had a fabulous day painting despite the threatening rain. Look for another stop at this great site. Marcie focused on the lake, while I on the guest cottage .Here are our efforts.

These two postings are from Lydia Mountain in the Blue Ridge range near Charlottesville. I was attending a wedding there and brought my paint box along. The landscape was very different from Vermont, with a blue in the mountains I found very challenging. Never travel without Your paintbox!!

Dog's Head Pool

Between all the rain this summer, I have managed to get outside to paint some. I have also been rained on more times than I care to admit. Dog's Head is an easy place to get to from where I live, so with the threatening rain it makes a good place to paint. One can easily run for cover from here. This painting reflects the dripping humidity and heat of the day as I saw and felt it.

Along the Lamoille

Above the falls at Dog's Head the water of the river swirls around and created this sandbar with very calm water on the down-river side. It makes an almost tropical feel to the vegetation there. Yet another challenge and unique scenery for VT.

Another view from this fascinating place. I am still going bigger with the panel size, and I think it is allowing my painting to be more expressive in terms of the brush strokes.

Dog's Head on the Lamoille

There is a rock formation on the Lamoille River that looks like a big St. Bernard looking out over the falls. It isn't a big falls but it opens up to the flat tidal pool you see here. I am currently standing on the Dog's head rock formation looking downriver. I have also increased the size of my panel to paint on. Either I am getting gutsy or foolish! At least the frogs enjoyed watching me from the pools all around.

Another trip to the barnyard yielded this painting. I was drawn to the sharp shadows of the mid-afternoon light. We haven't seen much of the sun this summer so the shadows were that much more exciting.

These trailers are all over the place, there is a simplicity and beauty to these structures. The dish antennae add some character, too. This was done on the same day I did one of the covered bridge paintings (I'm sitting next to the covered bridge while painting this.) More coming, and thanks for looking. -mv

Not far from the Schribner covered bridge is Rocky's farm and it offers a great play of shapes to paint. Couple that with shadows and light and you could spend a good amount of time in just one spot painting. I still haven't exhausted my fascination with his farmyard, so You will be seeing more of it coming up.

We only managed to get out painting one day this weekend, it was rainy and COLD! The sun did peek out a bit, but it was still a stretch to get these colors out of the landscape. On a sunny day those chairs would look more inviting. There is far too much green in the landscape already, it seems we went from spring to summer colors very fast this year.... if only it would warm up some!

I usually like to return to the same place to paint, often not far from home. There is always a new perspective or angle to see the scene from, which reinforces why you choose it in the first place.

I had painted this shed before, but this is the first I had included the red truck. Having decided there was more to explore with the red truck, I was all set to tackle it again. Imagine my disappointment to see the old junk hauled off yesterday on the back of a trailer!! Oh, the best laid plans.

After a beautiful weekend of painting weather we are covered in clouds and rain, but Vermont never ceases to amaze. The sky parted at dusk and put together this display of light that I tried to capture from my studio window. There is always something to paint.

Each of the artists posting here will have a different outlook on what we should contribute, much like the differing styles of work you will see here. It is my hope you will get a glimpse into the world of a practicing artist.

It always fascinates me as to why I choose to paint certain things. This painting was done atop a hill behind Marcie's house looking over the valley to the opposite hill. Often I am overwhelmed by the vistas, so I focus on a single element. In this case it was the red roof and the strip of light that made up the front lawn. Making those elements sit in there space, creating a place for the viewers' eye to travel make up the challenges that excites me as a painter. - Bradley Fox bradleyaf@earthlink.net
